Forage Folks: Innovations... PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 21 September 2012 09:19

0112fg_forage_folks_1The dictionary defines an “innovation” as the action or process of innovating; a new method, product or idea. Our Forage Folks column this month features four recent innovations in the forage world.

All have something in common – recognizing a need to do something better and coming up with a way to meet that need.

Have an idea for a future innovations feature? We’d love to hear from you. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to email an editor with your information to be considered for an upcoming issue.

Forage Folks: Shaping, packing and covering drive-over piles PDF Print E-mail
Written by Keith and Ruth E. Bolsen

0112fg_forage_folks_1Drive-over piles have become popular storage systems for many livestock operations today, but too often this silage never makes it from the pile to the feed bunk.

This loss in feed is commonly referred to as “shrink” and is measured by subtracting the total tons of silage fed from the total tonnage ensiled.

It is estimated that about 20 percent of the silage in the country is lost to shrink every year at a steep price to producers.

Forage Folks: Silage savvy: Dairies share silage management know-how PDF Print E-mail

0612fg_forage_folks_5Corn silage is king when it comes to dairy cattle rations. According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, the U.S. produced more than 108 million tons of corn silage in 2011.

Unfortunately, a large portion of this silage is lost to shrink year after year.

Industry estimates suggest about 20 percent of the corn silage ensiled each year is lost.

This loss in feed comes at a very steep price: approximately $1.3 billion of the 2011 corn silage is expected to be lost to shrink.

Forage Folks: A few of my favorite things from World Ag Expo 2012 PDF Print E-mail

0112fg_forage_folks_1Mid-February always brings a trip to California and World Ag Expo. We had 15 members of our team in attendance, and we all managed to stay plenty busy, working in our three booths, making sales and editorial contacts and our Progressive Dairyman team was the sponsor of nine dairy seminars during the week.

I didn’t get as much time out of the booth as I might have liked, but did manage to see some of the show. I thought it might be fun to share a few of my favorite things, though this is definitely not comprehensive (we don’t have enough pages for that).

What were some of your favorite new products or things to see and do at Expo? Send an e-mail to me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and we’ll share them on the website. — Lynn Olsen, FG Editor

Idaho alfalfa hay acreage was 1 million acres in 2011 (NASS, 2012), which was down 130,000 acres from 2010. Peak alfalfa hay acreage was 1.2 million acres in 2003.

Production was 4.3 million tons and if we assume an average value of $225/ton, then alfalfa hay was worth $967 million in Idaho for 2011.

Less acres and a dip in yield produced reduced hay stocks compared to past years and some livestock operations may not have adequate supplies to last them until first cutting.
