0513fg_hayhauler_1Almost every vehicle develops a personality. And every vehicle that does indeed take on its own persona needs its own name.

This is not the chrome script on the nose, fender or rear that identifies the maker and the model. This is personal.

My first car, a 1953 Mercury, was given the moniker of “MJ special” by the fellow I was working for at the time.

It started to snow hard. We were on Highway 6 headed southwest out of Ely, Nevada. I was helping a friend move from Washington State to a wonderfully desolate Shangri-La due north from the fabled Area 51 in Nevada.

We were running three trucks more or less together. The Maestro was in the lead truck, the second piloted by a fellow who came along to help if the Maestro would swing back through the Salt Lake City area on the way home and haul some equipment he had there back to Washington, and the author in the third truck.

These are the words spoken by the teller of the story as remembered by the listener to the story. What happened was a young man in high school had just cold-cocked another student when he heard him telling a group that his sister was “a harlot.” (Look it up in the Bible dictionary.)

He went on to say that he was in a lot of trouble at school, which had a strict “no fighting” policy. “But I wasn’t fighting.

Years ago, a fellow I went to high school with shared an odd thought. He and his wife chose not to be parents because they felt unqualified.

They honestly thought, considering the life experiences both had seen, that it would be an injustice to bring children into this world, both to the child and to the world.

The thought he shared was this: “Adolf Hitler may have had one thing right. People ought to have to have a license before they can have children.” Over the years I’ve witnessed some unfortunate situations that make me think Brian had it right.
